Today's meeting started at 12:15 President Jeff presided. Beth Pryor led us in the Pledge of Allegiance; this was followed by Mashell Carissimi leading “The Four-Way Test” and Bob Lee with the benediction. Lunch was great, chicken Parmesan, with pasta and, you guessed it, green beans. Caesar salad and cookies book-ended the meal.

PRESIDENT TIME

President Jeff announced that he was able to secure Kendal Jackson as a wine sponsor for the fundraiser this weekend.

Next week’s speaker will be the president of McClaren Health Systems.

GUESTS

Ed Mastry announced the guests, who were both guests of the club and our speakers. They were Dawn Williams, with Bravo Programs, and Nijeria Peterson, a student who received a grant from Bravo funded by our donation to the same last year.

FLOWERS

Flower duty was handled by Amanda Oparka. Ed Mastry was the lone birthday celebrant. The remaining flowers were snatched up pretty quickly; Ellen Lysik bought a flower for each of the guests/speakers.  Amanda Oparka bought one for Mary Bednar, Ken Steele bought one for Julie Miller and Ellen Lysik, Beth Pryor bought one for the Prez and Gary bought one for Tina.

SONGS

Songs, even though I am not a fan of them, always seems to add some amusement to the meetings. Mary Ann Hosey was our song leader today and told Gary what song she wanted, Gary played a song with a similar title, but was not the song that Mary Ann was expecting, so there was that.  The Songs caught up in this drama were “Smiles” and “Smile, Sing a Song.” Now I can’t remember which was requested or which was even played, but it was humorous. Ending out this segment was “Sing a Song to Rotary.”

ANNOUNCEMENTSimage

  • Steve Krankota announced that Gloria Murray would be at the fundraiser this Saturday.
  • Bob Cannon wanted everyone that the Civic Center would feature the traveling Vietnam Wall (The Wall That Heals Aug. 5-8) and encouraged everyone to visit.
  • Bill Furest that at 100 tickets for the Nancy Lopez package we are only 25 from our goal. So buy tickets if you haven’t yet. If you have, then sell tickets. For either of these options, reach out to Bill.

RECOGNITION

Glenn Burton led recognition today starting with a trio of most missed Rotarians. Making up this group was Ellen Lysik, Mashell Carissimi and Bob Cannon. Beth Pryor got dinged for spilling her wine all over our table. Paul Woodring was fined for his lack of a name tag. Mary Bednar was tagged for hogging our speaker’s time last  week. Mary Ann Hosey and Gary were both rightfully fined for the song mix-up, but Mary Ann got hit with a little extra for the announcement that she will be having twin grandchildren.

SPEAKER PRESENTATION

Ellen Lysik and Julie Miller introduced our speakers today. They were Dawn Williams, with Bravo Programs, and Nijeria Peterson, a student who received a grant from Bravo funded by our donation to the same last year. Dawn started out giving us an overview of Bravo Programs and statistics that showed the challenges faced by Foster Kids following High School. This led up to Nijeria’s presentation.  Nijeria, was recipient of a scholarship from Bravo funded by the $2,500 grant given to Bravo by the Mount Clemens Rotary Foundation in 2020. She is currently a senior at Western Michigan University majoring in Business Law. She is set to graduate this December.
